Best Places In America To Surf – 20th June is International Surfing Day

The top 5 surfing spots in the USA

With International Surfing Day just around the corner, we take a look at 5 of the best surfing destinations in America.

On 20 June 2016, thousands of people across the world will head to their favourite beach to celebrate International Surfing Day. This unofficial holiday takes place annually, and its aim is to celebrate and promote surfing, and to encourage people to get out there and enjoy their local beach. The day is generally marked with a range of surf-related activities, including barbecues, film screenings, beach clean-ups and, of course, surf contests.

While it’s undeniably fun, surfing can also be dangerous so it’s important to ensure you have adequate travel insurance that covers you for adventure sports. With that taken care of you can continue your adventure with total peace of mind, leaving you free to concentrate on catching that perfect wave.

Montauk, New York

Located at the east end of Long Island and just 120 miles from New York City, the once quiet fishing village of Montauk is now a bustling surfer hangout. With swells converging from all directions, the surf is consistently good, throwing up sandbar tubes as well as reef and point breaks. Aside from the great surf, this lively town also offers excellent fishing, good nightlife, and an interesting mixed crowd of creative types and wealthy Manhattanites. Visit between June and November to take advantage of the hurricane season swells.

New Smyrna Beach, Florida

For high-performance surfing head to New Smyrna Beach which offers the most consistent (and probably most performance-friendly) break along the coastline of Florida. This laid-back seaside town is famous for its steep, wedging waves which provide the perfect stage for professionals and local talent to practice and show off their skills and tricks. The area also boasts over 13 miles of beautiful beaches, great fishing, and warm water that makes for pleasant surfing all year round. New Smyrna Beach surf is great at any time of the year, but the town is a spring-break favourite with many colleges, so time your trip carefully to avoid being inundated with crowds of students.

Santa Cruz, California

Scenically set between redwood forests and sea cliffs, this small Californian town is somewhat of a surfing mecca and was the proving ground for many big-wave riders of the 1950s. Affectionately referred to as “Surf City”, Santa Cruz has 11 surfing spots, with something for every skill and experience level. Beginners can cut their teeth at the more relaxed Capitola Beach, while experienced surfers should head to the famous Steamer Lane for world-class waves. The town’s surfing museum also offers a fascinating overview of surfing history.

Paia, Hawaii

No list of US surfing destinations would be complete without Hawaii. And while Paia on Maui may not match the waves on Oahu’s famous North Shore, this former plantation town still has plenty to recommend it. The eccentric yet friendly town is a hangout for surfers and artists from around the world, and it boasts miles of reef and white sand, along with solid, consistent surf and opportunities to try your hand at other activities such as kite-surfing and wave-jumping. The area is also home to the legendary Jaws break, which produces some of the biggest surfing waves in the world. Winter is the best time to visit, with plenty of impressive high swells which attract the pro surfers.

Kill Devil Hills, North Carolina

Don’t be put off by the somewhat ominous name – Kill Devil Hills in the Outer Banks is an ideal surfing destination, combining a laid-back, slow-pace of life, Southern hospitality and, of course, great waves. The Outer Banks region is thought to be one of the best surfing destinations on the East Coast and surfers from across the world flock to the area every year for the ESA tournament.

While there are some areas which are renowned for their exceptionally large waves, most of the beaches in the area are also suitable for beginners, and a number of water sports companies can provide surfing lessons for those looking to improve their skills.

With surfing firmly in the spotlight, now is the perfect time to take a look at some of the best surfing spots on offer throughout the USA. Whether you’re a novice or an experienced surfer, the USA has some fantastic surfing spots to choose from.
