The Festive Algarve
Louléregion events and festivals
Faro is the best-known city in Portugal, picturesque beaches, lively towns and laid back lifestyle. Beyond Faro’s borders though, there are events you should book into your calendar, that is, if you haven’t already.
January – Festival of “Chouriças” (Sausages)
Venue: Church Square, Querença (near Loulé)
Date: 20th January
The Sausages festival is held in Querenca, a small village 17miles away from Faro airport. The best way to enjoy the festival is to get car hire at Faro airport and drive to Querenca, it’s only a 40minutes drive.
Festival of “Chouriças” starts in late January and is also recognised as the Festival of St. Luís, the patron Saint of animals.Ironically, the event is celebrated by auctioning smoked sausages and a cultural fair with all the money from the auction going to charity.
13th Al Mutamid Music Festival
Venue: Loulé Cine-Teatro (performances start at 21.30)
Date: 26th January
Also in Loulé, if you are not a big fan of sausages you can take your car rental and go to the 13th Al-Mutamid Music Festival.
Performances include traditional music of the Bedouins and the Berbers interpreted by Nadia Baroud and the Kabylie Ensemble. With a focus on Kabylie music, a rhythmical type of music, the acts will be perfected on stage by a dancer performing Kabylie and eastern dancing. Try to steal some dance moves from the artists. That would certainly make a good story when you get back home!
February 12th“Carnaval” – Mardi Gras
Venue: the streets of Loulé
Date: end of January
Mardi Gras in the Algarve is held each year. It’sone of the most popular celebrationsin the region which attracts people from all around the world who are eager to be a part of the 100 years old Brazilian-style festival.
The party centre is in Loulé, where the carnival originates, but festivities are held throughout the region around the end of January. Because “Carnevale” translates into “put away the meat” – literally, around that date all restaurants in the area will serve a wide variety of seafood and local specialties for your own delight.
Brighten you holiday with a walk through the colourfully decorated streets and the very animated floats parade. The Algarve streets will be filled with music, dance and funtimes, with live music and good memories to take back home.
