Is it Safe to Visit the Red Sea Resorts in Egypt?
Egypt has consistently been an extremely popular tourist destination with millions of people making visits every year. In the past tourism has accounted for a large part of the revenue of the Egyptian economy. However, the recent Egyptian Revolution of 2011 sent shockwaves through the country. Egypt witnessed mass protests and numerous outbreaks of violence, leading to the toppling of the former President Hosni Mubarak and the election of a new government led by Mohamed Morsi. The Revolution created huge turmoil inside the country and has rightly raised questions about whether the Red Sea Resorts of Egypt are still safe to visit. But while there are still some security concerns, tourism is once again booming in the country.
Is there a threat to tourists in Egypt?
The Revolution certainly had a negative effect on tourism, but this does not mean that Egypt is unsafe to visit. According to the British Foreign Office, while there remains a terrorism threat in parts of the country, many areas are perfectly safe to visit. The Red Sea Resorts in particular are deemed safe. Indeed, security remains very tight in resort areas. Furthermore, current tourism levels are at a high level. It was recently reported that 8.8 million tourists came to Egypt in the first nine months of 2012. As such, if you visit Egypt do be prepared to follow official advice, exercise some caution and make sure that you have read all relevant security information, but the Red Sea Resorts themselves are running again and receiving tourists in large numbers.
What is there to do on holiday in Egypt?
The Revolution hasn’t altered Egypt’s reputation as an attractive holiday destination offering a variety of activities for holidaymakers. Egypt is famed for its history and has instantly recognisable landmarks that are always popular with tourists. For example, you can visit Giza and see the iconic pyramids, including the fantastic Great Sphinx and the Great Pyramid of Giza. Tourists can also go to Alexandria, a famous summer resort known for its beautiful sandy beaches and other attractions such as the stunning Catacombs of Kom el Shoqafa. Aside from these major sites, tourists can also indulge in other activities, such as a cruise down the famous river Nile.
At the Red Sea Resorts there’s also plenty to do, including diving to coral reefs just off the coast or visiting the numerous bars and restaurants. But if you just want to lay back and relax, there is nowhere better than the beaches at the Red Sea Resorts. There are few places better to enjoy the sun!
Aside from its unique attractions, like many places Egypt also has its share of casinos. If you fancy a flutter while on holiday there are plenty of places to visit. Casinos are normally located within hotels and have a variety of different games, including roulette, blackjack and slot machines. Most of the country’s casinos are in Cairo, but some are located in other Red Sea Resorts. Visiting a casino can be a great alternative activity while holidaying in Egypt.
So, Egypt is safe for tourists, particularly the Red Sea Resorts. A great deal of stability has been restored to the country after the Revolution. If you follow official advice and exercise some caution, there’s no reason not to visit the beautiful holiday locations of Egypt and enjoy your time like millions are doing today.
