Capital Shopping

Some of the best places in the city of London are to be found in the borough of Knightsbridge. Hotels in Knightsbridge have a reputation for excellence and luxury (which is true) and for being expensive (which is not, if you know where to look)

In fact, thanks to specialist websites like Millennium Hotels (visit the website to see their full selection of hotels in Kensington) just about anyone can enjoy the 5 star treatment of a stay in a Knightsbridge hotel without having to pay through the nose for it.

Which is a good thing, as some of the most famous shopping spots in the country are to be found within walking distance of Knightsbridge.

Top of the list surely has to be the world-famous Harrod’s. Harrod’s has grown from humble origins back in 1849 when it was established by Charles Henry Harrod, a grocer and tea-merchant. However, the attention to detail that made Harrod’s such a success back in the day continues to this day, when the shop is one of the biggest in the capital.

In fact, by 1902 the shop already had 2000 employees and 91 departments, and adopted the famous motto “Everything for Everybody, Everywhere”. Nowadays it’s owned by House of Fraser, but most people know it simply as Harrod’s.

If you still have a little bit of cash to spend after a shopping trip to Harrod’s, the only place to go to is Harvey Nichols. Once a linen shop (it opened its doors for the first time 36 years before Harrod’s) it moved from its original location in 1880 to the site where it’s still found today.

Over the following decades Harvey Nichols range of goods increased, and the shop benefited from Knightsbridge becoming known as one of the premier shopping areas in the world.

After changing hands several times over the centuries it finally came to it’s present owner in 2003 when it was taken off the stock exchange. It now only stocks the highest quality merchandise and a trip to Harvey Nichols is a lot like going celebrity spotting as well as a shopping expedition.

Then, if Harvey Nichols and Harrod’s haven’t sated your appetite, it’s well worth simply wandering around some of the streets in Kensington and Knightsbridge. There are few places in the world that can claim to have as many luxury boutiques, and even if you’ve no money left to spend, you can easily window shop on some of the most beautiful streets in the capital.
