Best Cities in Canada
Canada presents travelers with a diverse list of options, ranging from big cities to areas of unspoiled beauty. Because the country is so large, it is impossible for anyone to hit all of the major cities on one trip. After visiting a couple of them, however, most travelers will be intrigued enough to return to the Great White North on multiple occasions. The following list highlights some of the most interesting cities for tourists to visit, but if you want to truly make the most of a Canadian road trip, make sure that you also take some time to explore places that are off the beaten path.
Toronto
Not only is Toronto conveniently located within a couple of hours of Niagara Falls, the U.S. border and cottage country, but it is also one of the best places for cultural lovers to visit. The city hosts the annual Toronto International Film Festival, and it is also the home of a thriving Broadway scene. Public transportation makes it easy to get around, and the prevalence of social opportunities provide travelers with built-in opportunities for meeting new people.
Montreal
Many American tourists feel like most Canadian cities are very similar to their homeland, but Montreal provides a truly international feel. The citizens of Montreal speak a mixture of English and French, and it is easy to see the influence that France had on the local architecture. Montreal offers something for everyone, ranging from the very modern Casino de Montreal to a stroll through the city’s most historic neighborhoods.
Vancouver
One of the most appealing aspects about Vancouver is that visitors can enjoy the perks of a big city while also taking in the stunning beauty of the ocean and the mountains. The city is also one of the most premier ski destinations in the world, making it the perfect place to mingle with other tourists during the winter.
Quebec City
If you want to step back in time, Quebec City is the perfect place to start. Unlike any other city in North America, this historic traveler’s dream come true contains 17th century architecture, cobblestone walkways, fortress walls and a thriving cafĂ© culture. The locals speak mostly French, but this only adds to the city’s charm. Due to its unusual landmarks, the city has been named a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Niagara Falls
Although this city is sometimes looked down upon by travelers who want to experience something different, it is truly stunning to see the view of the Falls from the Canadian side of the border. If the tourist attractions within the city are not your cup of tea, you can enter the surrounding area where you will discover the beautiful wine region. The Shaw Festival also offers visitors the opportunity to enjoy some of the best live entertainment in the world.
Exploring the Country
As you travel from city to city, you will have the option to make detours to some of the most interesting roadside attractions. For example, travelers near Niagara Falls will find a great photo-op in Jordan’s Harbour. Locally known as the Pirate Ship, this area contains the moored hull of a ferry that was built in 1914. Sometimes the best moments of any trip are the ones where you stumble upon something as unexpected as a pirate ship off the side of the road, so make sure that you stay alert throughout your journey.
