A Desert Delight
The Red Sea is famous for pristine beaches and some of the best diving in the world, but it has also become one of the biggest tourist resort strips in the world, and despite cheap holidays to Egypt being in plentiful supply through companies like On The Beach, the resort charm is not to everyone’s taste.
Head a little bit further along the coast, however, and you find yourself in Dahab, one of Egypt’s hidden gems and a wonderful place for a family holiday. Dahab is slowly developing, and has some fantastic restaurants and wonderful hotels, whilst retaining some of that relaxed charm that has made it a hit with travellers for decades.
One of the great things about a beach holiday in Dahab is that it’s not all about the beach. Sure there are endless stretches of golden sand and you’re practically guaranteed good weather, but the mountain backdrop hints at some slightly more energetic activities should you fancy swapping your flipflops for hiking boots.
Dahab is a preferred location for guided excursions into the deserts in the heart of Egypt, and also a great place for trekking, climbing, camel riding, hiking, and tours to the nearby heights of the famous Mount Sinai. There’s more than enough to do to tire out even the most energetic of kids, whilst enjoying an unforgettable holiday.
Of course, if you’d rather stay on the beach than Dahab is great as well. Dahab is actually a stretch of coast more than one place and means “Gold” in Arabic, which tells you everything you need to know about the coastline. A short journey along the coast can take you to some of the Red Sea’s best dive sites, whilst a short trip on a boat will take you to the world class reefs in Ras Muhammad National Park, which, though beautiful above the sea, is unforgettable as soon as you get below the surface.
The Dahab region is a wonderful blend of authentic Egyptian culture, an opportunity for adventure, and an upmarket tourist destination. Whatever you’re looking for in a beach holiday you’re sure to find it in the Dahab, and have a holiday you’ll never forget.
